Reported data on South Mountain Community College industrial design department ranking, according to Forbes, and US News. Which degrees will give you the best chances of landing a job after you graduate? Some students select a major because it teaches them practical skills that are valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major because they love the subject. The most popular college major is business, split equally between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the majority of computer science and engineering majors. Computer science majors study topics ranging from software development to robotics and game design. Graduates in these fields typically tend to be very well-paid. On the list of women’s popular majors, education, English and liberal arts dominate.

Instructors typically make some of their academic research available online. In addition, they may have real-world business experience, depending on their background. Students can participate in group discussions with a live professor in attendance via Google Hangouts, a video-conferencing application. Online education can open up the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript, if you so choose. Alternatively, you can complete additional credits for a grade.

Doing business online is a great option to supplement your income while still a student. By registering a domain name, pointing the name servers to your hosting company, then building an active website via a WordPress template, you're in the game. Similar to magazine page layout, website design success is governed by two factors, visitor traffic and online sales conversions. There are many search engines from which you can buy pay-per-click advertising, with Google Adwords being the most popular.

Online Courses - MOOCs

South Mountain Community College pagenameIf a high school student is passionate about going to a particular college, but doesn't have the grades, he or she may try to apply for a degree major that is less popular, or harder for the school to fill. Pursue your career interests, not high-paying starting salaries, and your overall job earnings will reflect the enthusiasm that you bring to your work, increasing over time as you gain business experience. If you focus your prospective degree choice on salary alone, there is the risk that you may suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending college, and you might end up earning a lot of money as a highly-skilled, technical consultant, or by starting your own small business. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, and offer a variety of learning platforms, utilizing cloud-based software and Google apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree earned on campus. Udemy online learning, a site which allows anyone to build (or take) online courses, is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Khan Academy now offers over 3,900 micro-lectures available via YouTube. Coursera, another online-learning software platform, has millions of enrolled students around the world. Through MIT Open Courseware online classes, educators can improve development of their curricula, making their instruction more effective.

Graphic Design Jobs

According to the career center, students can learn to develop software apps for the iPad and iPhone, and focus on starting their own small business, if the job market is tight. Graphic design schools focus on studio art, computerized design, commercial graphics, and website design. Some schools require applicants to submit a portfolio of their work. Art directors are responsible for the layout of pages, and design of images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging, and movies. They create the overall 'look' of a work, and also manage teams of assistants, who carry out their commands.

Graphic designers create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They help to make an organization recognizable by selecting color, images, or logo designs that represent a particular idea or identity to be used in advertising and promotions. About 29 percent of graphic designers are self-employed, and work as freelance commercial artists.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of physical sciences, offering you college credit for honors-level classes that you have taken while still in high school. Test yourself with free practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, you may be able to receive course credits, or advanced placement, when you start college. You must request that the College Board send your official AP score report to the colleges of your choice, either at the time of testing or afterwards, through a score report request.

Nursing & Medical Job Listings

Earning a CNA degree (Certified Nursing Assistant) is the first step towards becoming a fully-qualified nurse. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to join the workforce quickly. The next step in a nursing career is to become a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN ( Licensed Vocational Nurse). These are year-long programs, in which you'll work under an RN distributing meds, treating wounds, and providing basic patient care.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
